Suspect charged as two women die in New Jersey hit-and-run incident after World Cup watch party

  • Mariana Elizabeth Valverde Beltran, 58, and Maria Isabel DeLosAngeles Salgado Ayala, 61, were fatally struck in a hit-and-run incident in Newark, New Jersey, reportedly after attending a World Cup watch party .
  • The collision occurred on Saturday at Park Avenue and North 7th Street, where video footage shows a red vehicle barreling through an intersection and hitting the women, throwing them airborne.
  • Both victims were transported to University Hospital where they were pronounced dead following the incident.
  • David J. Zapata-Vera, 26, of Newark, surrendered to police on June 23 and faces charges including two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide and two counts of second-degree leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death.
