Susanna Reid reveals struggle with 'difficult birth' after emergency caesarean

Susanna Reid shared her experience of being forced to undergo an emergency caesarean with her first child while speaking with medical consultant Martyn Pitman.

The Good Morning Britain presenter shares three sons - Sam, 21, Finn, 19, and Jack, 18 - with her ex Dominic Cotton.

Martyn, who claims he was fired after whistle-blowing on unsafe maternity care, joined GMB with actress Sarah Parish to share his story.

Susanna revealed said: “I don’t want to oversimplify, and I probably am going to, between midwives who want women to do as much as they can to have as natural and normal a birth as possible, and often they’re up against consultants, who perhaps want more surgical procedures.

“I had to have an emergency caesarean with my first child. I had the birthing pool all set up, and I wanted a natural birth - but it didn’t work out that way.

“The second time around, I was advised by a consultant to have another caesarean but I wanted to try again. I had quite a difficult second birth.”

She added: “Often, pregnant women are caught in the middle.”

Meanwhile, Susanna recently opened up on the "hurdles" she faced when attempting to book her breast screening appointment.

The GMB host admitted she had previously ignored her invitation to book the screening but Sarah, Duchess of York's shock cancer diagnosis was a "wake-up call".

The Duchess of York has revealed that her screening led to her cancer diagnosis and subsequent operation, with a spokesperson for the royal confirming she is now resting at home.

Describing the booking process, Susanna said "I went online and looked up where the breast screening services are in my area on the NHS website and rang the number to be told, 'I'm really sorry, this isn't the number to ring for your breast screening.'"

Ed questioned whether this could "put people off" and Susanna added: "That's a hurdle, isn't it?"

Susanna explained she was given the correct number, which she contacted before being given an appointment in a hospital far away from her home.

The GMB presenter eventually secured an appointment in a nearby hospital.

She joked to Ed: "You're losing interest already so you can see why people [do lose interest]."
