Former Nottingham Forest youngster Oliver Burke has been linked with a move to Millwall this month.
And some fans have debated whether that is a sign the Lions are searching for a potential replacement for Jed Wallace, who is wanted by the Reds.
Burke finds himself out of favour at Sheffield United, having made just three appearances in the league so far this season, as well as three run-outs in cup competitions.
According to The Sun, Championship rivals Millwall are plotting a “surprise late move” for the 24-year-old ahead of the January transfer window entering its final week.
It comes as Forest remain keen to sign winger Wallace, although their efforts to prise him away from The Den have been rebuffed up until now.
Able to play on the flank as well as up front, the report about Burke prompted some speculation on social media.
One Reds fan said: “Could be a certain someone’s replacement? #NFFC.” And someone else asked: “Replacing Wallace?”
Burke came up through the ranks at the Nigel Doughty Academy, before leaving for RB Leipzig in 2016.
His spell in Germany lasted barely a year before he joined West Bromwich Albion. He went on to have loan spells at Celtic and Alaves, eventually moving to the Blades in September 2020.
YorkshireLive report Burke is among a group of players who will be allowed to move on this month, if the right deal can be struck. He has previously been linked with Blackburn Rovers.
