Surprise inspection: Ganja, other banned items found in jails in Bihar

PATNA: Simultaneous raids were conducted on Saturday at various jails in the state to ensure that prohibited items are not being used by inmates. During the inspection, the teams seized banned items like smartphones, khaini (tobacco), cigarettes, ganja (drugs) and utensils from undertrial prisoners in some jails.

The searches were carried out at all the 59 central jails, district jails and the sub-divisional jails in Bihar in order to curb crime network operating from the jail premises. The officials said a cellphone, packets of khaini and many mobile numbers written on a piece of paper were seized from the Ara jail. The inspection was carried out by SP Sanjay Kumar Singh and ADM Kumar Mangalam.

Khagaria DM Alok Ranjan Ghosh, along with a team of police officeres headed by SP Amitesh Kumar, raided various wards of Khagaria jail in the morning. They seized a number of objectionable items, such as knives, scissors and tobacco from the prisoners. The DM, however, said no major incriminating materials and contraband were recovered during the search operation. He asked the jail authorities to provide better facilities and civic amenities to prisoners. The district administration has planned to hold a “prisoners’ darbar” for the redressal of their grievances.

Cellphones, cash and some banned substances were recovered from prisoners in Motihari jail. In Jehanabad jail, cooking heater, mobile charger and vegetable knife were found during the raid. In Sitamarhi jail, a cellphone and a charger were found near the toilet outside the ward and mobile charger, tobacco and gutka were found in Sheohar jail.
