Surface Pro update fixes key cellular bugs — just as Microsoft leans into 5G

Microsoft Surface Pro 11 with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.

Microsoft recently shipped a firmware update for the Surface Pro (11th Gen) that fixes some annoying issues. We don't always cover firmware updates, since they are often only minor changes, but the February firmware update is a bit different.

The update addresses an issue that can prevent cellular connectivity from working when using a VPN. It also fixes a bug that can change cellular settings to SIM, overriding a previous selection of eSIM.

The Surface Pro (11th Gen) is one of the best 5G Windows laptops. The 2-in-1 form factor pairs perfectly with being able to connect to the web without tethering to a device or hopping between Wi-Fi networks.

Microsoft outlines the fixes and improvements in a support document.

The recent firmware update does not appear to be connected to the Microsoft and Ericsson partnership announced recently, but the timing lines up well. Thanks to that new partnership, more Surface Pro owners will connect over 5G. The firmware fix makes sure that users can connect through a VPN without losing cellular connectivity.

Microsoft partnered with Ericsson to streamline the process of setting up and managing devices with 5G connectivity. Automatic eSIM switching and remote policy management also come as part of the partnership.

"Through Microsoft Intune and Ericsson Enterprise 5G Connect, IT teams can automatically enforce secure connectivity profiles and enterprise policies across every 5G-connected device, minimizing manual setup while ensuring consistent, compliant user experiences everywhere employees work," said Ericsson in a press release.

Microsoft and Ericsson plan to release 5G bundles that include Microsoft 365, Intune, and Ericsson Enterprise 5G Connect. The bundles will come with Surface Copilot+ PCs such as the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro (11th Gen).
