Supreme Court stays Somya Gurjar’s suspension as JMC mayor

JAIPUR: The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the suspension of Somya Gurjar from the post of JMC-Greater mayor. The order, which comes seven months after the suspension, has paved the way for Gurjar to return as mayor.

However, neither Gurjar nor state government officials were willing to comment on the issue claiming they haven’t received the orders till Tuesday.

Manish Singhvi, appearing for JMC-Greater, confirmed that the apex court had stayed her suspension order.

The state government had suspended Gurjar and three other councillors after they allegedly assaulted JMC commissioner Yagyamitra Singh Deo on June 6, 2021.

Following the suspension, the state government appointed Sheel Dhabhai as the new mayor.

An official said, “On Monday, the state government gave Dhabhai an extension of 60 days. After taking legal advice and examining the SC order, it will be decided whether she will continue to work as officiating mayor or not.”

The state government had also started a judicial inquiry into the matter after the suspension. The decision was challenged by Gurjar in the Rajasthan High Court, but the court refused to interfere.

Commissioner Deo had alleged that Gurjar and four councillors misbehaved and assaulted him at the mayor’s chamber after calling him for a meeting on June 4, 2021.

An FIR was lodged at Jyoti Nagar police station against the mayor and four councillors.
