A Bench comprising Justice J. B. Pardiwala and Justice K. V. Viswanathan allowed a petition filed by Rana’s family after observing that his medical condition had shown no improvement despite prolonged treatment and medical care.
The court stated that a competent medical board may exercise its clinical judgment on withdrawing life support, in accordance with the safeguards and procedures established in the landmark judgment of Common Cause v. Union of India, which recognised passive euthanasia and the legality of living wills.
