Superman 2 Man of Tomorrow release date, cast, plot and trailer speculation: Everything we know about the DCU movie

Superman 2 concept art by Jim Lee showing Superman holding a screwdriver and buddying up to Lex Luthor, who is clad in his purple and green battle armor.

Man of Tomorrow is currently in the middle of filming, and after Supergirl failed to set the box office on fire, all eyes are on DC's Boy Scout to pull the DCU back from the brink. After beating the crap out of each other Superman, Man of Tomorrow sees Clark Kent team up with his eternal foe, Lex Luthor, in order to take down a villain who is bigger than both of them combined.

Concrete information on the new movie is spread far and wide, so we've rounded up everything there is to know about Man of Tomorrow. Below, you'll find everything from who's who in the cast to the release date and more. Plus, we have our best plot theories (with the latest intel gleaned from Superman's cameo appearance in Supergirl).

So, for everything you need to know, head down to our ultimate guide to one of the most exciting upcoming DC movies. For even more, you can see our roundup of all the projects coming in the DCU: Chapter One, including Clayface. Up, up, and away!

The Man of Tomorrow release date is July 9, 2027. Director James Gunn broke the news of the sequel online on September 3, 2025.

So, pending any major production delays, Superman will be soaring into cinemas again next Summer.

Man of Tomorrow plot speculation

As far as the Man of Tomorrow plot is concerned, our biggest clue so far has been the film's announcement concept art. The images, shared by Gunn, Corenswet, and Hoult when the movie was first revealed (and which you can see below), show Superman and Lex in his Warsuit. While the pair are fighting in one of the pieces of art, it seems like they could be teaming up in some of the others, with Supes even holding a screwdriver to seemingly help fix Lex's armor in one of them.

At CinemaCon, Gunn, Corenswet, and Hoult appeared at the Warner Bros. Panel via video. In the video, Corenswet says, "Imagine saving the world with your sworn enemy," with Hoult adding, "A new villain and an unlikely alliance."

Another huge clue for the Man of Tomorrow plot comes from an early cast confirmation – Lars Eidinger is set to play Braniac in the film. Fans were already suspecting he was going to be the villain Supes and Lex are up against in the story after Gunn shared a picture of the script with a cross-section of a human brain on the cover.

Gunn revealed in late December 2025 his inspirations for his onscreen Brainiac, saying: "I love aspects of many versions of the characters, from the 1950's Binder stuff to the surprisingly scary Wolfman stuff to the animated versions and up through the truly creepy and wonderful, current Absolute Brainiac." He also liked a comment from another fan that read: "Absolute Brainiac is the stuff of NIGHTMARES."

Peacemaker season 2 offered further clues. In the show, Lex Luthor teams up with Rick Flag Sr., while the latter's vendetta against metahumans leads to the creation of Salvation, a planet used as a prison for such individuals – though Peacemaker becomes the first inmate as a way for Flag to even the score for the death of his son.

Gunn himself has previously indicated that these plot threads will be very important to the DCU moving forward. "People should expect that the way that the military and Rick Flag and everybody are working together and they've created a probably illegal prison for metahumans on another dimension is gonna be a part of DCU stories going forward," he told Rolling Stone. "And not just a tertiary, 'Oh, this is Arkham' – it's a part of the stories. There's an escalating war, obviously, that's going on between the government and metahumans. And this is a part of it."

With filming now underway, on June 1 we got our first look at Lex's practical Warsuit after James Gunn himself took to social media to reveal the first glimpse. This came ahead of several days of location shoots, with leaked on-set images cluing us in on some interesting details about the new movie. Firstly, Lex is on the receiving end of a Kryptonian beatdown. Second, Superman himself looks badly injured by... something. And, thirdly, Lex appears to be using a deep-cut weapon straight from DC comics.

Surprisingly, Supergirl doesn't really lead into Man of Tomorrow in any major way. Though we know from the end of the movie that Kara Zor-El has put he partying ways behind her, and is ready to make a life on Earth and help her cousin, Cal-El. Producer Lars P. Winther confirmed as much at the Supergirl premiere, telling The Hollywood Reporter: "[Supergirl] ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done [with] her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in Man of Tomorrow. It’s all more Earth-based."

Finally, one clue could come from the movie's title. In Alan Moore's 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?', we follow Superman's final days on Earth as he pays a visit to several of his enemies and other familiar faces. Could the stakes be about to get a lot higher for Corenswet's Man of Steel?

Man of Tomorrow cast

Though Man of Tomorrow isn't technically a sequel to Superman, according to James Gunn, it's very much a follow-up in the sense that... most of Superman's cast will be in Man of Tomorrow.

Initially, only David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult were confirmed to return. Later, Lars Eidinger was announced as Braniac, following a global search. Since then, Adria Arjona has reportedly been cast as Maxima (though many expect that character may be a smokescreen for the fact that she's playing Wonder Woman). We've also learnt that fellow superfolk Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) and Green Lantern John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), will also appear. A stacked cast!

We'll keep the list below updated with every cast member, and who they are playing:

  • David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman
  • Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor
  • Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
  • Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen
  • Lars Eidinger as Brainiac
  • Adria Arjona as Maxima
  • Milly Alcock as Supergirl
  • Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern John Stewart
  • Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl
  • Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner
  • Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific
  • Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher
  • María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer
  • Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
  • Stephen Blackehart as Sydney Happersen
  • Matthew Lillard
  • Sinqua Walls
  • Andre Royo

Is there a Man of Tomorrow trailer?

No, there isn't a Man of Tomorrow trailer yet. The movie is currently filming, so it's likely we'll have a while to wait before we get our first (official) glimpse of the movie in motion. The first Superman trailer debuted in December 2024 ahead of a July 2025 release, so we can hopefully expect to see a Man of Tomorrow teaser at the end of 2026.
