General elections for the Ohio House of Representatives will take place on Nov. 3. The primary was on May 5.
Heading into the election, Republicans have a 64-34 majority, with one vacancy. All districts are up for election this year. In Ohio, a supermajority, which allows the party in power to override the governor's vetoes, exists when one party holds at least 60 House seats. Republicans gained a supermajority in 2012, when they won 60 out of 99 House seats.
Democrats are targeting the chamber in order to break the Republican supermajority. Democrats need to win at least six Republican districts, while maintaining their own, to break the supermajority. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) has targeted 11 districts, including three that Democrats already hold. DLCC President Heather Williams says, "2026 is shaping up to be a historic election year, and the DLCC is all hands on deck to break the GOP supermajority in Ohio that has been in power for over a decade."
The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) includes Ohio in its "Core Republican Chambers" list. RSLC President Edith Jorge-Tuñón says, "These chambers represent durable governing majorities, deeply rooted political alignment, and a significant share of the party’s overall legislative strength nationwide, making them essential to preserving long-term balance across the map."
Ballotpedia considers 11 districts to be battlegrounds. These include districts that had a margin of victory within five percentage points in 2024, DLCC targets, and districts with election forecast ratings of Tilt D/R, Lean D/R, or Likely D/R. Democrats represent three battlegrounds and Republicans represent eight. Four districts are open. The other districts have an incumbent running. To read more about these districts, click here.
