Even though Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira also penned the script for the cancelled DCEU Supergirl movie starring Sasha Calle, the screenwriter says she started completely from scratch when approaching the DCU project.
"Completely different," said Nogueira to CBR when asked if she used any of the DCEU Supergirl script for the upcoming movie. "No, honestly. Nothing carried over. Isn't that crazy? It was really brand new. I think the only thing that was helpful was because of all that I knew so much about the character. I knew so much. But even the destruction of Krypton was different. The Woman of Tomorrow [comic] was really the guiding light."
After making her debut as Supergirl in the 2023 DCEU movie The Flash, Calle had signed a multi-movie deal and was expected to star in her own solo film. However, when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the new co-heads of DC Studios, the duo wiped the slate clean and set out to restart the universe, which meant recasting all characters. DCEU Superman star Henry Cavill was replaced by David Corenswet, and Supergirl's Calle by House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock.
The new Supergirl is based on the hero from the DC comic series The Woman of Tomorrow. In the comics, Supergirl is sent to Earth to join her cousin Superman after her planet is destroyed. However, one day she is approached by someone seeking revenge on those who destroyed her life. The new movie follows a similar premise, and introduces Lobo, played by Jason Momoa.
From that description, we can already see how Alcock's hero differs from Calle's hardened, alternative take on the character. Rather than landing on Earth as a baby, Calle's Kara Zor-El was imprisoned in Siberia. She joined the DCEU after Barry Allen and Bruce Wayne broke her out of detainment to help fight General Zod. Not much is known about the DCEU Supergirl movie, other than it would've been a spin-off to The Flash.
Gunn's DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters is set to bring a whole stack of new incarnations to the screen. After Supergirl, Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler will suit up as the glowing green heroes in Lanterns, Tom Rhys Harries will shapeshift into Batman villain Clayface, and Corenswet's Superman will save the day once again in Man of Tomorrow.
