Super Bowl 2026 halftime show live: Latest updates as Bad Bunny prepares to headline tonight

Bad Bunny will headline the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show tonight at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, an event that is set to draw millions of viewers from around the world.

The Puerto Rican megastar born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio will become the first male solo Latin artist to perform the halftime show, as well as the first to perform their set entirely in Spanish.

However, he reassured any non Spanish-speaking viewers that his show will be “fun and easy”, and that people “only have to worry about dance”.

He previously appeared on the Super Bowl stage as a special guest for Shakira and Jennifer Lopez’s headline show in 2020. His performance also takes place a week after his latest album Debí Tirar Más Fotos became the first Spanish-language record to win Album of the Year at the Grammys.

Accepting the prize, Bad Bunny denounced president Donald Trump’s administration for its expansion of immigration arrests, and said: “ICE out.” Trump has claimed he won’t watch the Super Bowl, as he disapproves of Bad Bunny and Green Day, the rock band who are also performing tonight, with MAGA supporters tuning into the so-called “All-American Halftime Show” instead.

Bad Bunny’s meteoric rise: from grocery store bagger to Grammy awards and a Super Bowl stage MAGA can’t silence

22:22 , Roisin O'Connor

Donald Trump certainly knows about Bad Bunny now. In October last year, the president claimed he’d “never heard” of the trailblazing 31-year-old, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio. As recently as 2016, Ocasio was working as a grocery store bagger in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, uploading tracks to SoundCloud between shifts. Today, the Puerto Rican star has made himself simply inescapable.

My colleague Kevin EG Perry traces how he got here:

Guest star rumours....

22:16 , Carsen Holaday

Last year, Kendrick Lamar was joined onstage by several notable guests, including R&B singer SZA, to perform their collaborations on songs like “Luther” and “All the Stars.” He also had actor Samuel L. Jackson appear as “Uncle Sam” throughout the show, and tennis legend Serena Williams made a surprise on‑field cameo.

Rapper Cardi B is nearly guaranteed to join Bad Bunny on stage for their 2018 hit “I Like It,” and she’s definitely already attendance at the game to show support for her Patriots wide receiver boyfriend Stefon Diggs.

“I Like It” also features J Balvin, who said he will be in the crowd to support Bad Bunny during the show. J Balvin and Bad Bunny famously joined Shakira and Jennifer Lopez during their electric halftime performance in 2020, but J Balvin recently appeared to shoot down speculation that he will return to the stage in an interview with TMZ. He then said on the Grammys red carpet, “I just wish my boy to kill it, and destroy it... But I’ll be there, definitely, to support him.”

Other artists who are speculated to join Bad Bunny on stage include Rosalía, with whom he collaborated on their steamy duet “La Noche de Anoche,” and Daddy Yankee, who has appeared on several reggaeton songs with the singer. Ozuna, Ricky Martin, and Chenco Corleone have also all had their names thrown around as potential surprise guests.

What Green Day has said about Trump and MAGA as they’re set to perform at Super Bowl

22:03 , Roisin O'Connor

Green Day have never shied away from making political statements — and the outspoken rock band’s upcoming performance at this year’s Super Bowl is likely to be no exception.

This week, the NFL tapped the longtime Trump critics to perform a special 60th anniversary Super Bowl tribute during the game’s opening ceremony. The rock trio, comprised of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, is expected to perform a handful of their best-known hits, while previous Super Bowl MVPs are welcomed onto the field.

Less love for Kid Rock's alternative Super Bowl halftime show

21:52 , Roisin O'Connor

Social media has buzzing with mockery for the so-called “All-American halftime show” organised by right-wing political organisation Turning Point USA. They’ve certainly organised my idea of the lineup from hell: Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice and Gabby Barrett. Talk about scraping the barrel.

One critic has labelled the event “Klanchella”.

Anyway, you can follow the latest updates on that debacle thanks to my colleagues in the States, who drew the short straw and get to liveblog that tonight instead of Bad Bunny.

What we said about Bad Bunny's latest album

21:16 , Roisin O'Connor

Bad Bunny’s Grammy-winning Debí Tirar Más Fotos was in The Independent’s top five albums of the year in 2025, here’s what the brilliant Hannah Ewens had to say about it.

“Global domination had felt inevitable for years, and with this album the Puerto Rican superstar fully cemented himself as one of the biggest pop artists on the planet – all while singing primarily in Spanish. Debí Tirar Más Fotos (“I Should Have Taken More Photos”) is a soul-achingly vibrant fusion of reggaetón, plena and salsa, its gorgeous lyrics meditating on the fate of Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio’s homeland. From the juicy opener “NUEVAYoL” to the bittersweet ache of “BAILE INoLVIDABLE,” Bad Bunny transports listeners into a sensual yet contemplative world where mind, body and soul feel simultaneously activated and alert.

“On “BAILE INoLVIDABLE,” he looks back on a past relationship in which memories – especially of dancing – remain painfully vivid. “No, I can’t forget you / No, I can’t erase you / You taught me to love / You taught me to dance,” he sings, each line cutting a little deeper. Since its release in early January, the album’s atmospheric shifts – late-night regret, sun-drenched mornings, genre-blurring moods – have captured the hearts of millions. Between Bad Bunny’s latest and the success of Rosalía’s Lux, it’s clear that English-speaking mainstream listeners are more than ready to have their musical expectations chall

What time are Green Day performing?

Donald Trump’s favourite rock band (ha) are kicking off their performance at the opening ceremony at around 6.30pm ET / 3.30pm PT / 11.30pm GMT.

Billie Joe Armstrong’s band will likely perform a few of their biggest hits, no doubt “American Idiot” will be among them.

After that, Charlie Puth will perform the national anthem, “America the Beautiful”.

Will Bad Bunny's set be in Spanish?

20:42 , Roisin O'Connor

Given that Bad Bunny's music is recorded in Spanish, yes! He might say a few words in English if he addresses his audience, but that’ll probably be it.

In October, Bad Bunny hosted Saturday Night Live and said a few sentences in Spanish during his opening monologue. When he concluded, he joked in English, “If you didn’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn,” a reference to the Super Bowl and his critics.

On Thursday this week, he joked that fans didn’t actually need to learn Spanish to enjoy his set — but said they should be prepared to dance. Let’s go!

Will Bad Bunny's performance be a political one?

18:44 , Maria Sherman

Well, MAGA is already claiming Bad Bunny was a political pick by the NFL.

There is historical precedent for it at the Super Bowl. In 2020, the NFL asked Jennifer Lopez to cut a segment featuring children in cages during her halftime performance, a critique of U.S. immigration policies. She refused. (Bad Bunny was actually a guest performer during that halftime show, which was headlined by Lopez and Shakira.)

Last year, Kendrick Lamar's set was an artful confrontation of American history and racial dynamics through metaphor, as the actor Samuel L. Jackson, dressed as Uncle Sam, complained of a performance that was “too loud, too reckless, too ghetto” and reminded Lamar to “play the game.”

Bad Bunny has never steered clear of political messaging. He has criticized President Donald Trump on everything from his hurricane response in his native Puerto Rico to his treatment of immigrants. At the Grammys Sunday, he said “ICE out” while accepting his first televised award of the night. His latest tour skipped the continental US; in an interview he said it was at least partially inspired by concerns that his fans could be targeted by immigration agents.

Trump has said he doesn’t plan to attend this year’s game, unlike last year, and he has derided Bad Bunny as a “terrible choice.”

Cardi B praises Bad Bunny ahead of his Super Bowl halftime show

18:21 , Associated Press

As Bad Bunny prepares to headline the Super Bowl halftime show, Cardi B says she's proud to see him step onto the world's biggest stage, praising his cultural impact and willingness to speak out during heightened immigration arrests.

“I’m proud of everything that he’s been standing up for against ICE and everything,” Cardi B told The Associated Press ahead of her performance at Michael Rubin’s star-studded Fanatics Super Bowl Party on Saturday, which featured performances by SZA, Don Toliver and Travis Scott.

The Grammy winner spoke with admiration and unity about Bad Bunny, who appeared with J Balvin on her chart-topping hit, “I Like It." The collaboration helped propel Latin music further into the global mainstream.

“It just feels like everything is aligned right now,” said Cardi B, who is of Afro-Caribbean descent with roots in Trinidad and the Dominican Republic. “It just shows how Hispanics, Latinos. ... We standing. They standing. We all standing.”

With Super Bowl buzz swirling around “I Like It” and the possibility of surprise guests, Cardi B was asked what it would mean to share the stage with Bad Bunny on such a massive platform.

“That’d be exciting," she said.

Kid Rock says Turning Point USA’s Super Bowl halftime show is for ‘underserved’ Americans

17:19 , Roisin O'Connor

Kid Rock has defended his upcoming performance at Turning Point USA’s “All-American Halftime Show” by saying he is focusing on his love for America rather than spreading hate.

The former rapper, 55, will headline the conservative group’s alternative halftime show Sunday to compete with the NFL’s official Super Bowl halftime pick of Latin superstar Bad Bunny, which has sparked backlash among MAGA supporters who said the singer was anti-Donald Trump.

“I think I speak for Turning Point and all the artists involved, that none of us are approaching this with any hate in our hearts at all,” Kid Rock, whose real name is Robert James Ritchie, said Friday during his appearance on Fox & Friends.

Pop singer Charlie Puth to perform the national anthem

16:59 , Roisin O'Connor

National anthem performances at the Super Bowl have a patchy history, but Charlie Puth is a categorically great singer and especially nerdy when it comes to key and pitch. So he’s pushed back against some grumbling about his upcoming gig, writing on X in December: “I’ll never claim to be as good of a singer as Whitney Houston ever was. But I assure you we’re putting a really special arrangement together - in D major. It’ll be one of my best performances.”

I’m inclined to believe him, even if I am very un-fussed about the anthem itself.

What Green Day has said about Trump and MAGA as they’re set to perform at Super Bowl

15:20 , Roisin O'Connor

Green Day have never shied away from making political statements — and the outspoken rock band’s upcoming performance at this year’s Super Bowl is likely to be no exception.

This week, the NFL tapped the longtime Trump critics to perform a special 60th anniversary Super Bowl tribute during the game’s opening ceremony. The rock trio, comprised of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, is expected to perform a handful of their best-known hits, while previous Super Bowl MVPs are welcomed onto the field.

Green Day’s addition to the 2026 Super Bowl performance lineup comes months after the NFL faced backlash from Trump and his MAGA base for inviting Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny to headline the big game’s halftime show. Accusing the “DtMF” superstar of being a “massive Trump hater,” and an “anti-ICE activist,” MAGA supporters later announced they would be hosting a rival event, called The All-American Halftime Show.

Super Bowl ads aren’t cheap. Here’s what they cost in 2026

14:24 , Roisin O'Connor

The Super Bowl might be one of the most-watched sporting events of the year — but some just tune in for the commercials.

Big-budget advertisements shown during breaks in the game are often one of the biggest draws of the evening, and this year appears to be no exception.

Several ad spots have already dropped, including Oscar-winner Adrien Brody starring in an ad for TurboTax, Sabrina Carpenter appearing in an ad for Pringles, and Andy Samberg and Elle Fanning leading a Hellman’s commercial.

Why Bad Bunny won’t be paid to perform in front of millions at the Super Bowl

13:49 , Roisin O'Connor

Bad Bunny likely won’t be paid a cent by the NFL for his halftime show performance.

The 31-year-old — real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio — was tapped to headline this year’s halftime show, sparking backlash from among the MAGA crowd, including some of Donald Trump’s most loyal followers, who have labeled the Puerto Rican rapper and singer a “massive Trump hater,” an “anti-ICE activist,” and slammed him for having “no songs in English”. Boo hoo.

While many may assume the “Tití Me Preguntó” singer may be receiving a large paycheck for his performance, halftime show performers do not receive any compensation.

The important symbols that could show up in Bad Bunny's set

10:49 , Maria Sherman

Puerto Rican flags: In his song “La Mudanza,” Bad Bunny sings, “Aquí mataron gente por sacar la bandera / Por eso es que ahora yo la llevo donde quiera.” In English: “Here they killed people for showing the flag / That’s why I bring it everywhere I want now.” It appears to be a reference to Law 53 of 1948, better known as the Gag Law, a ruling by the Puerto Rican Legislative Assembly that attempted to suppress the independence movement on the island and criminalized displaying the Puerto Rican flag. It was repealed in 1952. It is also one of many reasons Puerto Ricans are known for waving their flag with pride for their island.

It is almost certain that the flag of Puerto Rico will appear in some form on the Super Bowl stage. But its colors are worth noting. If it is shown in red, white and blue, that is the current flag of Puerto Rico and has been since 1952. If there are flags that feature light blue, that is reflective of the Puerto Rican independence movement. A black and white version of the flag has become synonymous with Puerto Rican struggle and resiliency. And if there is a flag that more closely resembles the Dominican Republic's flag, that is known as El Grito de Lares, a symbol of the Lares revolution — the first short revolt against Spanish rule in Puerto Rico in the 19th century.

Puerto Rican expressions: There may be a few Puerto Rican expressions uttered on stage, beyond just those found in Bad Bunny's music. That could be anything from “Wepa!” which is used in moments of excitement, not unlike exclaiming “Wow!.” It grew in popularity after the release of Alfonso Vélez's 1974 salsa song “El Jolgorio (Wepa Wepa Wepa).” Or “Acho, PR es otra cosa,” a phrase that became a fan chant during Bad Bunny's performance of “Voy a llevarte pa’ PR” during his residency. It translates to “Damn, PR is something else.”

Casita: At Bad Bunny’s residency in Puerto Rico last summer, he performed across two stages. One was built to resemble a casita (“little house”), for the pari de marquesina, a house party. These structures are synonymous with Puerto Rico and the Caribbean at large.

Pavas: A symbol that is likely familiar to Bad Bunny fans everywhere, a pava is a straw hat traditionally worn by jíbaros, or Puerto Rican rural farmers. It has become a symbol of pride for the island. The singer even wore a leather version of the hat on the red carpet at the 2025 Met Gala.

Flamboyan tree: The second of the two stages at Bad Bunny's residency focused on showcasing the island’s natural beauty with its flamboyan and plantain trees. The former are a common feature in Puerto Rican art for its flowers, most commonly seen in brilliant red, orange and yellow hues. The image of the tree evokes Puerto Rico almost as immediately as the sound of its national nocturnal residents, el coquí (a frog with a distinctive sing-song-y call heard only at night.)

El Sapo Concho: Not to be mistaken with el coquí, el sapo concho is the endangered Puerto Rican crested toad that Bad Bunny has used an animated version of in his visuals for “Debí Tirar Más Fotos.”

Traditional Puerto Rican instruments: Because much of Bad Bunny's music pulls from bomba and plena, it is likely that a few of those traditional instruments will be on stage. Look out for a cuatro (a small, four-stringed guitar), güiro/güira (a percussive instrument made of a hollow gourd), palitos (also a percussive instrument resembling two long, wood sticks), cencerro (cow bell) and maracas. For the bomba songs, specifically, there may be a barriel (a barrel) and for plena, a pandereta (tambourine).

The Super Bowl halftime show stands as one of the world's most iconic stages, and this Sunday, global superstar Bad Bunny is set to command it.

Fresh from his historic Grammy win for Debí Tirar Más Fotos, his heartfelt tribute to Puerto Rico, the artist's performance is poised to become a landmark moment for Latino culture.

Anticipation is high, though specifics about his set remain tightly guarded. During a recent interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, it was confirmed that Bad Bunny's performance will span 13 minutes, consistent with the typical 12 to 15-minute duration of previous shows.

Super Bowl 60, in which the New England Patriots face off against the Seattle Seahawks, will kick off at 6.30pm ET / 11.30pm GMT, while Green Day’s performance will take place at 3pm ET / 8.30pm GMT. Bad Bunny’s performance is expected to begin at around 7.45pm to 8.15pm ET / 12.45am to 1.15am GMT.

If you’re in the UK, the whole game and performance will be broadcast live on Channel 5, Sky Sports and DAZN, while NBC are hosting the event in the US.
