Sunderland unveil environmental plans to become UK's first net-zero club by 2040

Sunderland AFC is hoping to be the first club in the UK achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. The club has unveiled plans to generate affordable clean power, including the building of a solar farm at the Academy of Light.

The Black Cats have also revealed they're preparing a planning application for the farm which would feed clean, renewable energy into the surrounding area. They've also suggested proposals to build a canopy solar farm above the car park at the Stadium of Light.

A club statement read: "The plan is in line with the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals, focusing on SAFC’s role as a Football Club in the local and regional communities and the impact it can have to support environmental change and energy usage. It is the Club’s ambition to be energy-self sufficient from renewable sources by 2028 while also providing energy to the National Grid network for the benefit of the wider community.
