Sunderland are clinging onto their play-off spot by the skin of their teeth after the latest round of League One fixtures.
Nervy Black Cats fans watched on as promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday, Plymouth and Wycombe played fixtures that had previously been postponed due. This could have spelled disaster as all three sides nearly claimed victories - an outcome that would have dethroned Sunderland from the play-off places.
However, an in-form Sheff Wed conceded an 83rd-minute equaliser at home to Accrington Stanley - despite playing them off the park for large chunks of the game - allowing Sunderland supporters to breathe a huge sigh of relief. The Owls still have a game in hand on the Black Cats as their game against Fleetwood Town last month was called off due to bad weather. For now, they are outside the play-off places by a point but that outcome could be different when the two teams meet on April 26.

Another side that moved within a point of Sunderland is Wycombe, who bagged a dramatic 94th-minute winner against, ironically, Fleetwood. Jason McCarthy’s last-gasp strike earned Gareth Ainsworth’s men a crucial victory and put the Chairboys a point behind the Black Cats. However, unlike Sheff Wed, Wycombe do not have another game in hand and are now tied with Sunderland on 38 games.
Plymouth took a huge stride to securing their play-off spot with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Portsmouth. Victory at Home Park puts the Pilgrims two points ahead of Sunderland with a game in hand but, with just eight points separating fourth and ninth, the race to the Championship looks destined to go to the final day of the season. Plymouth’s game in hand is against Cheltenham at home next Tuesday.
