Renting can be a minefield at the best of times but throw a pet or two into the mix and it can get even more tricky!

Finding a property that allows pets, however, isn’t as difficult as you might think, according to new research from HireAHelper. In fact, almost three-quarters (73.2%) of rental listings in the US allow small dogs, large dogs, or cats.

But which cities and states are the best for pet parents to rent in? The study takes a look at this, too, so let’s dive in.

The most pet-friendly state is Colorado, in which a whopping 86.3% of listings are pet-friendly. It’s followed by Minnesota (84.8%) and North Carolina (83.2%). In contrast, Hawaii is the least pet-friendly, with only a third (33.2%) of listings being pet-friendly. It’s bottom of the rankings by some margin, with the next state up being Rhode Island (49.3%). Next is Alaska with 50.2% of listings allowing pets.

But what if you prefer city living, and you’d rather know that the particular city you’re moving to welcomes pets? Well, Austin is the most pet-friendly city. The Texan city loves furry friends, with a huge 93.3% of listings allowing pets. And while Texas might not be one of the three most pet-friendly states overall, Texan cities complete the top three pet-friendly cities with Plano (93.2%) and Dallas (92.7%).

As for the least pet-friendly cities, there seems to be a trend of them being near the coast – 11 of the 15 least pet-friendly cities are near bodies of water, with five of them being in California. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Honolulu in Hawaii is the least pet-friendly city for renters, with just 19.8% of listings permitting pets. Next up, meanwhile, are Bakersfield, CA (39.5%) and Fresno, CA (44.7%).

Interestingly, the most dog-friendly and cat-friendly states can differ. While Colorado has the highest percentage of dog-friendly listings with 85.4%, it’s pushed into second place in the cat-friendly rankings by Minnesota, in which 82.7% of listings are pet-friendly. North Carolina and Texas make up the top three dog-friendly states, while Washington comes after Minnesota and Colorado in the cat-friendly rankings. Why not take a look at the top US cities to have a dog and top US cities to have a cat, too?
