Plans for a special Strictly Come Dancing 20th anniversary episode to be filmed at Buckingham Palace have reportedly been cancelled.
The episode of the popular BBC show, which will mark its milestone in December, was allegedly called off due to a “logistical problem” and “diary clashes”, while Giovanni Pernice's misconduct investigation is believed to have played a role in the decision.
A source told The Sun: “[Queen Camilla] found the idea of hosting at the Palace exciting.
“But it was felt by some that the decision to welcome the show might come to be seen in a negative light.”
The Standard has contacted the Palace for comment. The BBC had no comment.
It was previously reported that an episode during the 20th anniversary series would be broadcast live from Buckingham Palace, with an almost certain appearance by the Queen.
TV insiders said the BBC and royal officials had already chosen the venue, likely the ballroom, and planned to replicate the familiar Elstree Studios setup as closely as possible.
The source told The Mail on Sunday: “There have been talks going on for some time now. Camilla loves Strictly, so what a dream this is for her. It has been about getting the timing right and 2024 is the year.
“Strictly started in 2004 so it is two decades. There is huge excitement about this happening – it is going to be quite a night.
“The Queen has been a long-standing fan of the show, so it feels like a perfect fusion. There has already been so much thought that has gone into this, the room has been selected and it will be absolutely stunning.”
Camilla's passion for Strictly is well-known. In April 2022, she told 2021 winner Rose Ayling-Ellis that she had voted for her, saying: “I don't know how you did all those dances.”
Pernice is currently being investigated by the BBC over his behaviour while appearing on Strictly Come Dancing.
The Italian professional dancer first joined the BBC One dance competition in 2015 and quickly became a firm fan-favourite.
Last month it was announced that he would not be returning for the new series in September. This followed accusations of “threatening and abusive” behaviour towards his celebrity dance partners.
Pernice has strongly denied all allegations against him, describing them as “simply false”.
