Strawberries and cream tested from five major supermarkets - with two big let-downs

The iconic tennis event of Wimbledon makes its grand return this week, and if you've been waiting all year for the tournament to begin, it's likely you'll be glued to the TV for the coming weeks.

Plenty of sports stars, royals and A-list celebs are expected to attend the courts and get involved in the event, and for those of us watching at home, we can feel closer to the action by preparing a certain sweet snack.

Strawberries and cream have been a Wimbledon tradition since the very first event back in 1877, and in preparation of this year's tournament, one journalist set out to decide which supermarket we should be buying these summer staples from.

Birmingham Live journalist Dayna Farrington visited her local Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Aldi to see which supermarket offered the tastiest strawberries and the most decadent cream for the most affordable price.

Here's what she found - warning that two supermarkets should have been avoided at all costs.

Tesco

Tesco strawberries and cream (Birmingham Live)

Strawberry punnet £1.59 / Single cream 80p

Total price: £2.39

Score: 4/5

First up on the taste-test was Tesco. The punnet had much bigger strawberries in there, but there wasn't as many in the punnet as other supermarkets.

The strawberries alone were really juice and super sweet, and paired really well with the cream - which was super smooth. We were off to a really good start - with a score of 4/5.

Asda

Strawberry punnet £2.05 / Single cream £1.20

Total price: £3.25

Score: 2.5/5

There was definitely more strawberries in this punnet compared to Tesco, and there was a great range of sizes too. We could only get hold of a bigger tub of single cream too, so this obviously upped the price slightly.

When I chopped the strawberries you could already feel that some were a bit smushy. However, they were nice and full of flavour.

But I wasn't too impressed by the cream. It had a real sour and almost bland taste. I gave them a score of 2.5/5 as the cream let the team down.

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's strawberries and cream (Birmingham Live)

Strawberry punnet £1.65 / Single cream 75p

Total price: £2.40

Score: 5/5

With Sainsbury's there was a good variety of sizes in the punnet. They were slightly more expensive than Tesco, but also cheaper than Asda.

I also noticed that as soon as I opened the cream it was thicker - and it also seemed to pour thicker than the previous two. It was also the cheapest out of the five.

But these were the best strawberries and cream. Hands down. They were the perfect combination. Juicy, sweet strawberries and thick and delicious cream. I could have eaten more bowls.

Full marks - 5/5

Morrisons

Morrison's strawberries and cream (Birmingham Live)

Strawberry punnet £2.29 / Single cream 80p

Total price: £3.09

Score: 2/5

Next on the taste-test was Morrisons. They were all quite small strawberries, not as much of a range as other supermarkets. They also felt quite smushy, more so than Asda.

The cream was tasty and probably the best on it's own. However, I really didn't like the strawberries.

Not only were they mushy, but they also taste rather sour. I wasn't impressed at all. Sadly I had to score them a 2/5.

Aldi

Aldi strawberries and cream (Birmingham Live)

Strawberry punnet £1.89 / Single cream 99p

Total price: £2.88

Score: 4.5/5

Last but by no means least - Aldi. There was a real nice range of sizes in the punnet. They tasted really nice too - as juicy as you'd expect strawberries to be. They had a lovely sweet aftertaste too which wasn't overpowering.

While the cream was nice, with a good consistency and nice flavour. They teamed really well together.

I think that Sainsbury's still pipped them to the post, so I scored them a 4.5/5.
