Storm Franklin: Sepa warns river expected to burst banks as Scots brace for flood

A river is expected to burst its banks leaving Scots bracing for a flood.

Whitesands in Dumfries is preparing for damage after SEPA warned that the River Nith will overflow.

Experts have now predicted that that water levels may reach Brewery Street and Bank Street.

It comes as Storm Franklin batters the country with a yellow weather warning in place till 1pm tomorrow.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "We have been notified by SEPA that the River Nith is expected to burst its banks and flood Whitesands in Dumfries.

"SEPA are predicting that water levels may reach Brewery Street\Bank Street.

"If your vehicle is parked in either of the Whitesands Car Parks or in The Dock Park Car Park please move it immediately

"A yellow weather warning for wind as part of Storm Franklin is in place until 1pm tomorrow."

Strong winds of up to 60mph are expected inland with gusts of 70-80mph forecast across higher grounds and exposed coasts.

Large waves are also expected as conditions may become dangerous as the stormy conditions continues.

The strong winds will also be accompanied by heavy and frequent wintery showers, according to the Met Office.

Blizzard conditions are expected across the higher grounds before conditions begin to ease later on Monday February 21.
