Storm Franklin: Passengers told not to travel and services cancelled as storm hits

Certain public transport services in Merseyside have been cancelled after Storm Franklin hit the region on Monday, February 21.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind, which covers most of England and Wales until 1pm today.

The storm has already caused chaos around the region, with trees felled and roads blocked.

The Met Office also warned that road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible, which has been the case in Merseyside.

Certain operators, including Northern Rail and Mersey Ferries, are not running until later today, while other operators have warned of delays and busy services.

Below, we list the services in Merseyside affected by Storm Franklin this morning.

Northern Rail

No Northern Trains will run in the North West until at least 10.30am on Monday. It also advises people not to attempt to travel this morning as it is not offering transport alternatives.

The train operator stated on Twitter: "Due to the severe weather and numerous incidents, caused by Storm Franklin, we will be terminating all services in the North West. No further trains until at least 10:30, and this might be extended."

"Do not attempt to travel, do not head to stations as there are no alternatives."

Merseyrail

There is disruption on the Merseyrail network this morning.

A number of trains on the Hunts Cross to Southport line were cancelled on Monday morning, but trains are now running as normal.

Train services were suspended between Rock Ferry & Hooton due to a fallen tree at Eastham Rake, and rail replacement bus service were now in operation.

Merseyrail stated just after 9am that service resumed on the Chester and Ellesmere Port lines but they will be subject to delay and possible cancellation until a normal timetable can be restored.

Mersey Ferries

Ferry services have been suspended until further notice due to strong winds.

Stagecoach

The bus operator has warned of delays on its routes due to fallen trees, but it will keep passengers updated throughout the day.

Liverpool Lime Street

Lime Street has advised people to check National Rail before travelling. It added that some speed restrictions are in place in order to keep everyone safe, so services may be delayed.

Avanti West Coast

Avanti has advised people to delay their journeys until after 10am today, but warned that services will be very busy.

It stated on Twitter: "Services are subject to speed restrictions, delays and cancellations due to the extreme weather and as a result are very busy."
