Stories of tiny premature North Lanarkshire babies followed in new BBC documentary

The second episode of an insightful new documentary by BBC Scotland will air in two weeks time, and once again focuses in on the lives of those who work and attend University Hospital Wishaw's neonatal unit.

In this episode of Tiny Lives, the programme follows the story of baby Harrison who was born prematurely at 35 weeks.

Harrison is Nicole and her partner Ryan’s first baby and there are added complications as the new mum is diabetic.

This episode opens with baby Harrison’s birth however, it soon becomes clear that there’s a problem – he’s stopped breathing and resuscitation is required.

As Tiny Lives highlights, until Harrison can breathe on his own, he will stay at the University Hospital Wishaw’s intensive care ward as he adjusts to life outside the womb.

Being on the neonatal unit can be a long journey for babies and their families and the team at Wishaw aim to get babies home as close to their original due date as possible.

Born at just 26 weeks, twins Amelia and Darcie have been in Wishaw for almost five months. Mum, Aimee, and dad, Andrew, have been by the twins side as they’ve gone from fighting for their lives on ventilation to sharing a cot.

For babies on the unit, going home is the final milestone.

As Darcie reaches the point she can go home, Amelia still requires medical support and will need to stay in hospital a few more months.

For mum Aimee, it’s a bittersweet moment as she must leave baby Amelia behind.

Tiny Lives gives unique access to the exceptional team at University Hospital Wishaw’s neonatal unit who provide round-the-clock care for the tiniest of lives.

The second episode of Tiny Lives will air on Wednesday, June 22 at 8pm on BBC Scotland.
