'Stop-gap' - Pundit makes Gini Wijnaldum Liverpool return admission

A pundit has said Gini Wijnaldum's potential return to Liverpool would only represent a 'stop-gap'.

Having left Anfield 12 months ago on a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, the move has not gone to plan and the Dutch midfielder is thought to be seeking an early exit after failing to nail down a regular starting berth. Speculation has mounted that Jurgen Klopp's side could be in for a surprise reunion.

The club have claimed that their transfer business has concluded following the arrivals of Fabio Carvalho, Darwin Nunez and Calvin Ramsey and that a new midfielder will be put on hold until the summer of 2023. And though Reds fans may be open to a Wijnaldum making a comeback on Merseyside, pundit Noel Whelan has backed the club to be patient and bring in the 'right people' when they become available.

“If you ask the majority of Liverpool fans, they’d probably want him back," he told Football Insider . “When it comes down to manager and the logistics of everything, it’s very hard to bring a player back so soon after they’ve left. Once you’ve made that decision, you’ve got to stick to that decision.

“He’s a fantastic player and he’d be a stop-gap, that’s all he would be. Liverpool need a more solid base when it comes to that midfield player that comes in. Someone with a bit of longevity.

“I think they are doing the right thing by biding their time and waiting for the right people to become available and go into the club for years and not just one season.”

Rumours continue to grow that Liverpool will make a move for Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham next season, with the player 'ticking all the boxes' for both manager Klopp and sporting director Julian Ward.
