A mechanic on TikTok has given his professional opinion as to why customers should stop buying a certain brand of spark plugs after seeing his Honda misfire on in its cylinders thanks to the small yet essential devices which are responsible for sparking an ignition in the engine.
The short video, posted by Shade Tree Mechanics on TikTok warns viewers not to use Bosch spark plugs in their Hondas. He claims that he used the plugs in his own Honda CRV and it resulted in all four cylinders in the engine misfiring. “All it was was the Bosch spark plugs,” he claims. Supposedly the mechanic has had this problem with five Hondas in two years.
The video is pretty much a P.S.A. for car people, something which TikTok is being used for more and more often. The algorithm will likely put this in front of the right people eventually.
But what is wrong with these spark plugs specifically?
While the original poster doesn’t go into much detail over why the spark plugs failed in his Honda, he isn’t the only person online complaining about the product. On Reddit, others have warned against Bosch spark plugs. One individual from four years ago warned against using the devices after a piece of ceramic around the electrode broke.
Another dissatisfied customer shared their discontent in a post on the bobistheoilguy.com forum after the porcelain on their plug cracked.
Boschsparkplugs.net also provided a list of problems that may occur including flashover, which is when the voltage sent to the spark plug shorts between the metal shell and terminal nut, they may just sound like car jargon, but long story short, it causes a cylinder misfire. Other issues include quenching, which is when the heat generated by the spark is absorbed, and shadowing, which is when the ground electrode blocks a portion of the air/fuel mixture from exposure to the spark.
What’s the alternative for Honda drivers?
So avoiding Bosch spark plugs sounds like some sound advice, but what should customers be using instead? Well Shade Tree Mechanics recommends NGK spark plugs and it seems like the car community on TikTok agrees. “It’s gotta be NGK for a Honda,” wrote one viewer while another added, “Ngk is the only option.”
As a matter of fact, most viewers recommended NGK for anyone with a Honda, “Honda and NGK go hand in hand,” noted one person. While all spark plugs have pros and cons, it seems the general consensus is to avoid the Bosch ones if you’re driving a Honda, or else your car could end up like the CRV in the video.
