'Stolen' VW Golf lands upside down on top of graves after crashing through cemetery

A car suspected to have been stolen landed on its roof on top of graves after crashing into a cemetery. Dramatic pictures have emerged showing the chaotic aftermath of the incident.

When police arrived at the scene, the Volkswagen Golf had been abandoned with nobody present. It had smashed through railings before flipping over and landing close to a row of headstones, leaving debris strewn across the ground.

No injuries have so far been reported. The crash happened early on Monday (May 23) near a junction in Chorlton, Manchester, with the car landing in the suburb's Southern Cemetery, the Manchester Evening News reports.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "The incident happened at around 5.30am. The car is a suspected stolen Volkswagen Golf.

"No injuries have been reported. No-one was there when officers arrived."

Manchester City Council says Southern Cemetery is the largest municipal cemetery in the UK and the second largest in Europe. It contains six grade II listed buildings, four of which are chapels.

The cemetery is the final resting place of individuals including British aviator John Alcock, who made history with the first non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919, and former Manchester United Manager, Sir Matt Busby. It also helped to inspire the Smiths song Cemetry Gates from their acclaimed 1986 album The Queen Is Dead.
