Police investigate reports of assault at Stockton

Police investigations into an assault at Stockton on the weekend were continuing on Monday.

Police scoured Griffith Park on Sunday after reports a woman had been assaulted the night before.

Officers and paramedics were called to the waterfront park off Hunter Street, near the harbour ferry terminal, about 6pm on Saturday, August 15, following reports of an assault.

In a brief statement, NSW Police said they had declared a crime scene and were making inquiries.

"A crime scene was established, and police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault," the statement said.

Residents reported a heavy police presence in the suburb on Saturday. Officers were in the area on Sunday.

NSW Ambulance paramedics assessed an adult woman at the scene, who was later taken to hospital for treatment.

Police have urged witnesses, or anyone with information about the incident, to contact Newcastle police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

No further details were available on Monday, as police worked to piece together what happened.
