Steven Hammell in Motherwell transfer vow as new boss reveals pre-appointment preparation

Steven Hammell has vowed to immediately hit the transfer market after being appointed Motherwell boss.

Hammell, 40, was confirmed successor to Graham Alexander and has signed a two-year contract with Brian Kerr as his assistant. He had been caretaker for almost two weeks before winning the race to step up from academy director to get the permanent job and become their 26th gaffer.

The Fir Park Hall of Famer, who had 17 years as a player with the Steelmen, started making transfer plans during his stand-in period in case he got the nod. Hammell said: “It’s something we’ve been preparing for if it was to be successful. And we have a number of names we want to bring in. We have some hugely talented players in this group and it’s now my job to get the best from them. I have first-hand knowledge of the exciting young players at the club and we will integrate them into the first-team environment when they’re ready. In addition, the players need some help with some new faces.

“As well as taking the team and planning my application, I have been busy identifying potential targets, should I be successful in getting the job. Now I have, one of my first tasks will be to look to strengthen our options across a couple of areas, where I believe our short-term needs are.

“The recruitment side is very difficult, especially with the stage of the season we are at. But we’re ahead of where we would be, we’re not starting today.”

Hammell will start as full-time boss with Saturday's Premiership clash against Aberdeen at Pittodrie and added: “It’s an honour for me to be given the responsibility as manager of this wonderful club.

“The last two weeks have given me an even bigger appetite for it and I am determined and ambitious to take this team on and put my own stamp on it. I hope I can continue to get my message across and give our supporters a team that will entertain them and a team they can see are giving their all.”
