There are plenty of questions surrounding the future of the Mets following the 2023 MLB trade deadline during which the organization were big sellers.
Following the departures of Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, among other key veterans, owner Steve Cohen spoke to reporters about Pete Alonso’s future with the franchise.
Via SNY, Cohen indicated that he “hopes thing works out” when it comes time for the slugger to hit free agency ahead of the 2025 season.
“We love Pete as a Met. He's an integral part of the Mets. He's still with us for another year. We hope we work things out,” said Cohen, who compared the situation to that of Brandon Nimmo’s free agency.

“I don’t want to talk about private conversations, but what I will say is that Pete is a great Met,” Cohen added.
Alonso enters his final year of arbitration in 2024 after which he’ll be an unrestricted free agent. This season, he’s playing under a one-year, $14.5 million deal.
In a conversation with Scherzer ahead of the trade deadline, which he later confirmed with reporters, Cohen admitted he could not promise the team would be in a position to push for World Series contention in 2024.
While Alonso was not moved at the deadline, The Athletic reported that the Mets listened to offers for the first baseman.
This season, Alonso made his third All-Star Game. The 28-year-old is slashing .220/.315/.512 with 31 home runs and 77 RBI across 98 games.
