Stephen Robinson named St Mirren manager on two-and-a-half year deal as Buddies splash the cash

Stephen Robinson has been confirmed as the new manager of St Mirren after the Buddies struck a six-figure compensation package with Morecambe.

The former Motherwell boss has sealed a return to Scottish football on a two-and-a-half year deal, 14 months after leaving Fir Park and becomes the club's highest paid manager in their history.

He is now set to take the side against Dundee on Wednesday after agreeing to succeed Jim Goodwin in Paisley.

The Buddies sounded out Scott Brown and Steven Naismith over their vacancy but have decided on a more experienced head with the 47-year-old who began his dug out career with Oldham Athletic.

He told the St Mirren website: "It's an absolute honour that St Mirren have come in and were willing to pay the compensation.

"It came out of the blue and when I spoke to the guys at the club it really impressed me what they are trying to do.

"We spoke in-depth about where we can take the club and there's real exciting times ahead.

"With the foundations that have already been built by Jim (Goodwin) it's up to me to take them on and build on what's already been done."

Former boss Jack Ross rejected the chance to return to the club.

In a hectic day Robinson took training as normal at Morecambe as they prepared for Tuesday’s huge League 1 clash away to top of the table Rotherham.

But hours later he was locked in talks to become the new boss in Paisley.

It’s understood a six figure compensation package was agreed between the clubs.

Robinson spent three years at Motherwell, taking them to the final of both cups in 2017-18.

He was credited with turning David Turnbull and Allan Campbell into first team regulars with both players moving on for significant fees - in Turnbull’s case a record £3.25m transfer to Celtic.

The Northern Irishman resigned on Hogmanay 2020 saying he had taken the Steelmen as far as he could.

He was appointed Morecambe boss on a three-year deal last summer, succeeding Derek Adams at the newly-promoted Shrimps.

The club currently sit fourth from bottom having won seven and lost 16 of 32 league games.
