Fuming residents have spoken out about the 'nightmare' issue of rats and fly tipping on their road. People living nearby say they have had enough of bins at the top of Cromwell Street in the Arboretum, overflowing with waste, some of which is thought to have been thrown away by restaurants.
It is an issue that has been ongoing for "years" with rats getting into residents homes as a result of the "horrible smell" that comes from the Biffa bins. Residents also say they have seen many people throwing rubbish on the road after they've been drinking.
Lucy Alderton, 23, a student who lives in the area, said: "We've only just moved in and it's not been awful but the smell from the big bins is awful. Where we used to live was a lot worse, it was a mess, but it's not much better here with the bins.
"I think this is the worst time of the year for it with it being the summertime and it being so hot. I haven't seen much fly tipping on the road to be honest but those bins are really bad.
"I think some of the restaurants dump their rubbish in there but if you look at it it's overflowing. We do have rats in and around our house as well.
"There are a couple of holes just out the front and they get in through there. It's not ideal and I hope something gets done with the bins because it's disgusting."
Melanie Sterling, 29, who also lives in the street, said: "I think it's at the top of the road where it's the worst. You can see how much a state those bins are in - it's completely overflowing with rubbish.
"The food makes for a horrible smell, just horrible, it's disgusting. I don't even know how often it gets collected but every time I walk past it the smell is bad and it looks awful.
"I think it was actually worse a couple of years ago - a lot of us complained - it was a nightmare. It's not as bad now and I haven't seen as many rats during the day. At night though you can't miss them!"
Another resident who has lived on the road for 18 years, said: "I am a resident of Cromwell street and have been for 18 years but in the past few weeks I have begun clearing out my house in preparation to move out asap. I can’t live here any longer it’s absolutely disgusting to look at and smell.
"I can’t have my windows open because of it and going outside frustrates me to the point it’s affecting my mental health knowing this is where I live. I no longer have a home I am happy in and every time I return to Cromwell street after work I instantly feel dread and anxiety
"The situation is disgusting and makes you think you are in the third world and certainly not a wealthy nation like England." Nottinghamshire Live attempted to contact the restaurants in the area for a comment.
