Steelers HC Mike Tomlin hints at Patrick Peterson at safety

After letting strong safety Terrell Edmunds leave in free agency, the Pittsburgh Steelers suddenly have a significant void on the depth chart. This was one of the topics head coach Mike Tomlin spoke on recently and noted that newly-acquired cornerback Patrick Peterson might be the answer at safety.

This is an interesting idea and similar to something the Steelers did with Cameron Sutton last season. Sliding Peterson to safety in sub packages would create a situation where either Arthur Maulet would slide outside and a different slot cornerback would be needed or Maulet stays put and Pittsburgh has to find another boundary cornerback.

Depending on what direction the Steelers want to go with this, it could have a significant impact on the 2023 NFL draft. If Peterson is penciled in as the third safety, Pittsburgh will need to commit a fairly high pick on a reliable cornerback. If not, that same pick could go to a true safety.
