States Race to Launch Medicaid Work Rules in Under 70 Days While a Judge Weighs a Multistate Lawsuit

A federal judge in Boston heard arguments on Oct. 22 in a multistate lawsuit challenging the federal rule that carries out new Medicaid work requirements and said he would rule in the coming weeks, STAT reported. The same week, state Medicaid officials gathered in National Harbor, Maryland, to compare notes on launching the requirements, which take effect in most states on Jan. 1, 2027.

That leaves enrollees facing two unknowns at once: the court's ruling and their own state's procedures. The court could leave the rule's limits on the medically frail exemption in place or strike parts of them, and states are still settling how they will verify work hours and exemptions with about 70 days to go.
