Sir Keir Starmer will set out the timeline for a major defence spending boost and give Donald Trump an invitation for a state visit when he visits Washington next week, it has emerged.

The prime minister will have a tough balancing act when he meets the US president, doubling down on the UK’s support for Ukraine while attemping not to fall out with Mr Trump.
