GSC Game World has confirmed that "STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl" will receive its first major expansion, Cost of Hope, on August 20.
The highly anticipated DLC will arrive alongside a substantial free 2.0 update for the base game, giving both returning players and newcomers a reason to head back into the dangerous Zone.
'STALKER 2 Cost of Hope' Expansion Adds New Story Content
Revealed through a new trailer, "Cost of Hope" will be the first major DLC expansion for the survival horror shooter since its 2024 launch. The story once again follows protagonist Skif, who becomes entangled in a mysterious signal that draws him toward previously inaccessible areas of the Zone.
The expansion will also explore the escalating conflict between Duty and Freedom, two of the most important factions in the "STALKER" universe. As tensions between the rival groups intensify, Skif will face difficult choices that could affect how the conflict develops.
Players will venture into new areas, including the Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. GSC Game World has also teased dozens of hours of additional gameplay, alongside new weapons, equipment, and enemies that will test players' survival skills.
Free 'STALKER 2' 2.0 Update Arrives Alongside DLC
Players who do not purchase Cost of Hope will still have plenty to look forward to on August 20. GSC Game World plans to release the free "STALKER 2" 2.0 update for all players on the same day as the expansion.
According to Polygon, one of the most significant technical changes will be the game's transition from Unreal Engine 5.1 to Unreal Engine 5.5.4. The engine upgrade is expected to support the game's continued technical development, while the newer update will also bring additional improvements and content to the base experience.
GSC Game World has yet to reveal every detail of the 2.0 update, but the studio is expected to provide more information as the August 20 release date approaches.
STALKER 2 Continues Its Post-Launch Evolution
The release of "Cost of Hope" and the free 2.0 update marks another major milestone in the continuous development of "STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl."
The game launched with an ambitious open world, atmospheric survival mechanics, and a compelling setting, although some of its systems and technical elements required additional refinement.
Since launch, GSC Game World has continued to improve the experience through updates, patches, and technical adjustments.
As for "STALKER" gamers, the 2.0 update is going to be broken this time. Others said that buying the DLC right now is not recommended since it still has unresolved problems like bugs.
