‘Staggered’ Starmer admits to MPs that he was wrong to appoint Mandelson

  • Sir Keir Starmer stated he was not informed that UK Security Vetting (UKSV) had recommended denying security clearance to Lord Peter Mandelson.
  • Starmer revealed he only learned on 14 April 2025 that Foreign Office officials had granted Mandelson developed vetting clearance on 29 January 2025, against UKSV's specific recommendation.
  • He highlighted that this information was withheld from him, the Foreign Secretary, other ministers, and the former cabinet secretary.
  • Calling the situation 'staggering', Starmer immediately ordered an investigation to establish the facts regarding the decision and who was aware.
  • Starmer affirmed that had he known about UKSV's recommendation to deny clearance, he would not have proceeded with Lord Mandelson's appointment as US ambassador.
