St Patrick's Day Derry 2022: Events taking place across the city

St Patrick’s Day 2022 takes place this Thursday, March 17, and there are plenty of events happening in Derry to celebrate the occasion.

With the Irish celebration largely being cancelled for the last two years due to Covid-19, some events are set to return this year.

Whether you want to spend the day enjoying a few pints of Guinness or spend the day with the family, there's something for everybody.

St Patrick’s Day 2022 is bound to be one to remember and all you have to do is put on some green clothing, a leprechaun hat and a pair of shamrock glasses, and head into Derry to enjoy the events listed below.

Traditional Irish Music
Waterloo Place | 1pm - 6pm

Derry is renowned for its music so come along and soak up some of the best local traditional Irish musicians to play in Waterloo Place alongside traditional Irish dancers. Sample some of our homegrown Irish foods whilst enjoying the music.

Magical Land of the Fairies & Little People
Peace Garden | 1pm - 6pm

Greater Shantallow Community Arts/Studio2 Creative Enterprises bring to you The Magical Land of the Fairies & Little People on Thursday 17th March 2022 from 1pm until 6pm in the Peace Garden Foyle Street.

The Peace Garden will be transformed into the Colourful Land of the Little People where children can Make a Wish on the Fairy Tree and Dance will the Little People until their feet are sore!

This magical fun-filled day of family fun will see 10 choreographed showcase performances that will enthral audiences whilst themed character performers will engage the public throughout the day.

Enjoy a pageant dance and drama performance of an enthralling Tail of Fairies and Mystical Irish Little Folk paying homage to their Ancient Magical King Brian who can grant them magic wishes if he so desires. Children and adults alike will be immersed in enchantment.

The Spring Carnival Parade
3pm-4pm Departing Bishop Street at 3pm

North West Carnival Initiative presents St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival Parade ‘Rebirth & Renewal.

Famed for their fantastical and flamboyant carnival parades, the NWCI has stepped into Spring for this year’s Carnival parade in celebration of ‘Rebirth & Renewal’.

Mystical creatures will snake their way through the city’s streets along with a host of characters representing young people from fables and fairy tales from faraway lands.

Today’s youth and culture will have pride of place, so expect to be delighted by dance moves from everything from ballet to hip hop.

The Spring Carnival Parade route (Derry City and Strabane District Council)

The NWCI works alongside Greater Shantallow Community Arts and In Your Space engaging with over 600 participants from local schools, youth clubs, arts and cultural organisations to create this highlight event of the weekend.

The St Patrick's Day Spring Carnival Parade commences at 3.00pm and will exit from Bishop Street Car Park onto Bishop Street.

From there it will proceed to the Diamond, travel down Shipquay Street to Whitaker Street, turn left onto Foyle Embankment and at Harbour Square Roundabout head left towards Strand Road passing the City Hotel, turn right onto Strand Road passing the Holiday Inn and The Strand Omniplex proceeding to Strand Road Car Park where it will end at approximately 4:00pm.
