St Pancras Station unveils its Wicked-themed Christmas tree

St Pancras International has unveiled its Christmas tree for 2024, in partnership with film studio Universal Pictures UK.

The towering ‘tree’ has been created to mark the launch of upcoming film Wicked, and is described as “an ode to the Emerald City” where it is set.

The film, based on the global blockbuster stage musical of the same name, launches in cinemas on November 22, and tells the untold story of the witches of Oz.

The 11-metre-high St Pancras tree towers above two floors of the station. It took 20 craftspeople more than 4,000 hours to create the tree, which was meticulously hand painted in green and gold.

Launched on Monday, it features over 100 intricately illuminated towers with tiny windows revealing characters and items from Wicked. Garlands of green and gold baubles have also been put up around the station.

At the centre of the tree is a hidden, detailed diorama of the land of Oz. The structure also features photo booths, and an immersive seating area playing music from the film.

In the run-up to Christmas, free events will be held near the tree, including the chance to meet Father Christmas, and sing-alongs on the station’s pianos.

A Wicked x Lush pop-up shop will also be open on the concourse in November and December, offering themed bath bombs, soaps, and toiletries inspired by the film’s characters.

Wicked stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony-winning British actress Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba - a young woman “misunderstood because of her unusual green skin who has yet to discover her true power”.

Global popstar Ariana Grande stars alongside her as Glinda, “a popular young woman gilded by privilege and ambition who has yet to discover her true heart”.

The film also stars Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh, and Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey, alongside Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz.

Wendy Spinks, Chief Commercial Officer at St Pancras International and HS1 Ltd, said: “The St Pancras International Christmas tree has become a fixture in London's festive calendar, and we understand the importance of bringing something spectacular and unique to the station for visitors to enjoy.

“This year, the opportunity to partner with Universal Pictures on their only Wicked Christmas tree in the UK was an easy choice, and we look forward to welcoming guests from across the country, as well as our international travellers, to experience it.”

In previous years, St Pancras has launched themed Christmas trees in partnership with brands including Tiffany & Co and Hatchards bookshop.

Erika Lewington, Marketing Director at Universal Pictures International, UK & Eire Ltd, added: “We are delighted to partner with St Pancras International to bring the world of Wicked to life through this enchanting Christmas Tree.

“We hope the wickedly dazzling experience enriches peoples’ journeys and brings a touch of magic to one of London’s most iconic destinations.”
