St Mirren teenager Jay Henderson opens up on proud moment as he bags first goal in front of his dad

Saints teenager Jay Henderson insists his wonderstrike against Dundee United was extra special - because his father was in the stands to see it.

The Buddies winger bagged his first senior goal for the club in spectacular style, playing a one-two with Greg Kiltie before slamming into the top corner from the edge of the box.

His strike helped set the St Mirren on their way to a much-needed 2-1 victory.

And the academy graduate insists he’s going to do all he can to keep himself in the side having earned the trust of manager Jim Goodwin in recent matches.

Henderson told Express Sport: “It was good to get my first professional goal.

“I’d have taken a tap-in but it’s even better when they come like that so I’m obviously buzzing.

"It’s good for St Mirren as well. I grew up at the club so it couldn’t have happened in a better way.

“My dad Darren was here but I didn’t see him in the stands - I didn’t even see it go in, I just had my head down!

"But I heard it go in so I was delighted and it couldn’t have happened in a better way.

“My dad played senior at Ross County, Hamilton etc.

“He was left footed, so the total opposite to me.

“Am I a better player than my dad? Aye, but he’ll not like me saying that!

“We ground out the win as well which shows the team spirit is there. We need to keep working hard in training and I think the points will come for us.

“Now I just need to go and show what I can do whenever the gaffer gives me the chance.”
