Big cities and tourist favourites are back in this Lunar New Year as travellers head to hotspots to ring in the year of the Tiger, according to booking data from Agoda.

Asia wide, the data shows capital cities as the top destinations, including Shanghai (No.1 in China), Tokyo (No.1 in Japan), Kuala Lumpur (No.1 in Malaysia), Manila (No.1 in the Philippines), and Bangkok (No.1 in Thailand). In other markets, classic resort destinations are travellers' top picks, including Bali (No.1 in Indonesia), Jeju Island (No.1 in Korea), Taichung (No.1 in Taiwan), Phu Quoc Island (No.1 in Vietnam).

Agoda's data continues to show trends of emerging destinations across multiple markets as travellers primarily continue to stick to domestic travel and explore their own backyard. New to this year's top eight most popular destination lists are Berastagi (No.6 in Indonesia) and Hongcheon-gun (No.5 in Korea). Meanwhile, Nantou with stunning mountains and lakes comes in at No.8 on Taiwan's list. The coastal city of Quy Nhon (Binh Dinh) rounds out Vietnam's top eight list. In Malaysia, the seaside town of Kota Kinabalu re-enters the list at No.7 as a gateway to Malaysia, while Johor Bahru is No.8.
