Upcoming Marvel movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day hasn't even hit screens yet, and it's already breaking records, as its first teaser becomes the most viewed trailer ever.
The first Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, which was released on March 18, has broken the record of most views in the first 24 hours online. We have to wait until Sony releases the full figures, but Global Box Office reports that the Spidey teaser hit over 500 million views, beating GTA 6's record in just 12 hours. The video game held the title after pulling in 475 million views in its first day online.
Brand New Day's success could be down to the trailer's bizarre release strategy. Sony chose to count down to the event by having a flurry of influencers release 2-second snippets every hour for 24 hours until the real trailer was released. Having the clips scattered around turned the release into a kind of scavenger hunt, and to be honest, it was quite fun. We covered it in our Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer live blog.
The full trailer was then broadcast via Instagram Live. The stream started with Tom Holland waiting inside the Empire State Building with a bunch of kids. It was quite sweet. The event took place just one day after Denis Villeneuve and the Dune cast revealed the first Dune: Part 3 trailer via TikTok Live. We can see a pattern forming here.
Aside from the release tactics, the actual Brand New Day trailer was pretty impressive, packed full of Marvel characters and plot details, without giving too much away. The teaser gave us a glimpse of what life is like for Tom Holland's Peter Parker without his love interest. After he wipes her memory in the last movie, Zendaya's MJ cannot recognise her Spidey lover and has even moved on with a new man.
We also got our first look at Jon Bernthal's The Punisher and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner (Hulk) make their Spidey debuts, as well as multiple villains such as Scorpion, Boomerang, and The Hand. We even got to see who Sadie Sink is playing, well, kind of. The jury is still out on whether the Stranger Things star is playing Jean Grey or not.
