Spanish minister issues urgent covid advice to UK tourists as cases rise

With the summer holidays now well under way, many people will be packing their bags as they prepare to step foot on a plane for the first time in two years.

Thanks to the covid pandemic, many people were unable to fly to their sunny destination with millions having had their trip postponed or cancelled.

But now with restrictions easing across the world, it won't be long before people get to experience the hot air again as cabin doors open and they walk down the airplane stairs.

However with cases rising in the UK and Spain, the Spanish minister has urged the most vulnerable to wear a mask if they are going on holiday. And according to Birmingham Live, officials have indicated that Spain could bring back mandatory face masks due to the increase.

Just recently the Health Minister of Spain, Carolina Darias, advised that everyone should start wearing a face mask in indoor public areas if they are not doing so already, with cases of coronavirus and hospitalisations increasing. Darias added that that the number of infection and hospitalisation rates over the last couple of weeks had been the highest since February, back when strict restrictions were still in place.

But now, Balearic Minister for Health, Patricia Gómez, said that it is “advisable” for vulnerable people to wear masks in enclosed spaces although there are no plans as of yet to make it obligatory.

According to Majorca Daily Bulletin, Gómez pointed out that, despite the fact that there may be a social perception that public administrations have excessively relaxed measures against covid, the Balearic government has never lowered its “guard”.

Gómez added: "I don’t particularly like to be told what to do, I like to learn what to do. I think people need to be given the tools and they need to be informed. If I go to a large concert, I will wear a mask. Everyone knows the risk they run. But it is still a personal decision."

The World Health Organization (WHO) shows that Spain has registered 136,364 new infections in the last seven days. Coronavirus infections have been increasing in Spain despite the high vaccination rate. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Spain has administered a total of 102,258,825 vaccine doses as of June 30.
