Spain travel warning as tourist hotspots hit by flash flooding with streets turning into rivers

Holidaymakers jetting off to Spain have been hit with a warning after periods of heavy rain over the last few days has resulted in flash flooding.

Tourist hotspots including Madrid have experienced some unpleasant weather alongside Valencia, where it had not rained significantly in months.

Due to the heavy rainfall, some of the streets have been turned into rivers in Murcia amid flooded buildings, submerged and countless road closures across southern parts of the country, reports the Daily Record.

Some locations in the Valencia region saw more rainfall during a few days last week than they have done in the previous six months, according to national weather agency AEMET.

Recording the highest rainfall in one day for more than 100 years was the town of Ontinyent with locals seeing 130 litres per square metre falling in just 24 hours, the forecasters state.

As well as these areas, rescue forces have been drafted in as the situation had been life threatening in the area of Molina del Segura.

Having had to rain for months, Madrid saw some appear overnight between May 25 and 26 with more precipitation falling within hours than in months previous, resulting in a number of distress calls being made across the capital.

The flooding throughout last week claimed at least 14 lives as 21 rivers overran their banks. There were at least 300 landslides triggered across the country as rain continued to fall upon terrain that had been parched for months.

The news comes as this means that people travelling to the area, including Glaswegians, may find it difficult to travel around due to the unsettled conditions.

And in addition to this, the wet weather is set to continue throughout this week in areas including Madrid and Valencia, according to the Met Office. However, conditions are set to be less severe.
