South Lanarkshire Council kicks off 'winter awareness week' by offering tips to locals

South Lanarkshire Council is offering tips and advice to help locals get through winter.

During this year’s 'winter awareness week', which the council launches annually, the local authority will outline some of the issues residents need to be aware of during the colder months.

Chairman of the council’s community and enterprise resources committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said the council would provide information and advice that he hoped would be "useful during the winter period".

He told Lanarkshire Live : “Today, we are focusing on getting prepared for winter, regardless of whether you are a driver or pedestrian.

“Both newly qualified and experienced drivers should take note of our handy tips and hints.

“Modern cars may have a range of features to help with adverse weather conditions, but there are some basic facts you should be aware of no matter the vehicle you drive.

“Always plan ahead as much as you can and play close attention to weather forecasts and any weather warnings that may be issued.”

First of all, the council is giving tips for those who drive to ensure they are safe during the winter.

It recommends that drivers have enough antifreeze in the car’s radiator and low temperature screenwash, drivers should also check that all their lights are working, they should also check that the batteries in their car and to check tyres are correctly inflated and have plenty of grip.

The council also has outlined a range of items drivers should keep in their car in case of an emergency. Items include an ice scraper and de-icer, a torch, jump leads and a first aid kit.

For pedestrians and those who plan on using public transport, the council is encouraging warm clothing and footwear with a good grip.

Footpaths in residential areas tend not to be gritted by the council therefore locals can help by clearing footpaths outside of their homes to help less able neighbours.

Grit bins are available for locals who wish to do this.
