South Korean director Ryu Seung-Wan's latest film, 'I, The Executioner,' has been selected to be showcased at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. This sequel to his 2015 hit movie, 'Veteran,' will be featured in the midnight screening category, which highlights genres like action, fantasy, horror, and thrillers. This marks Ryu's second appearance at Cannes, with his previous attendance in 2005 for his film 'Crying Fist.'
'Veteran' was a massive success at the box office, ranking as the fifth highest-grossing film in South Korean cinema history. The storyline revolved around police detective Seo Do-chul, portrayed by Hwang Jung-min, as he delves into the activities of a sadistic corporate heir, Jo Tae-oh, played by Yoo Ah-In.
In 'I, The Executioner,' set nine years after the events of 'Veteran,' Hwang Jung-min reprises his role as Detective Seo Do-chul, now joined by rookie detective Park Sun-woo, portrayed by Jung Hae-in. This film marks Hwang Jung-min's fourth appearance at Cannes, having previously attended for 'A Bittersweet Life,' 'The Wailing,' and 'The Spy Gone North.'
Ryu and Hwang have a successful collaboration history, with 'I, The Executioner' being their fifth project together. Ryu has received numerous accolades for his work, including Best Director awards at the Blue Dragon and Baeksang Awards for 'Veteran.' His film 'Escape From Mogadishu' was South Korea's submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2022 Oscars.
Ryu's most recent release, 'Smugglers,' features a star-studded cast including Kim Hye-soo, Yum Jung-ah, and Zo In-sung. 'I, The Executioner' is distributed by CJ ENM, the same company behind Cannes hits like 'Parasite' and 'Decision To Leave.' The film is expected to premiere in Korean theaters in the latter half of 2024, coinciding with the Cannes Film Festival scheduled from May 15 to 25.
Despite no Korean films competing in the main section, 'I, The Executioner' promises to captivate audiences with its thrilling storyline and stellar performances, continuing Ryu Seung-Wan's legacy of delivering top-notch cinema.
