South African rugby show claim Alun Wyn Jones has been finished for some time as they predict Wales annihilation

Wales have been completely written off by sections of the South African press ahead of their three-Test series against the Springboks this summer.

Wayne Pivac recently named his 33-man squad for the trip, opting for a near full strength group with just two uncapped players in the form of James Ratti and Tommy Reffell. The Wales boss also hinted that he will be looking to take the bulk of this squad through to the Rugby World Cup next year.

Despite the relative strength of the squad, Wales have been out of sorts this year and are long odds to cause an upset against the world champions. And it seems the hosts are in confident mood as well, with outspoken South African pundit Mark Keohane predicting a 'drubbing' in a video posted by SA Rugby Mag.

Keohane said: "They've come here 10 times and they've lost 10 times. Average score is 45-10. If you take the Welsh URC matches in South Africa this year - eight matches, eight defeats and an average score of 41-13.

"It's all in the stars. Jacques Nienaber, Rassie Erasmus - we expect nothing less than a 3-0 drubbing of the Welsh."

"Are you surprised that Pivac has brought his strongest available Welsh side, with all these veterans, a year out from the World Cup to do what? Take a beating.

"You bring that side here, they take a beating in Pretoria and Bloemfontein, and by the time they get to Cape Town there are very few of those players left after a very long season.

"What do you gain from that?"

Keohane also warned that the Boks were not planning on using the series against Wales as a warm-up for the Rugby Championship, insisting that the hosts want to 'pump Wales'.

He said: "They're not using this to see how youngsters go at home. They want to pump Wales and pump them good.

"Its going to be Wales' potential best against South Africa's potential best in a home series."

Keohane and SA Rugby Mag's Zelim Nel also turned their sights on Wales lock Alun Wyn Jones, who has been selected in the squad but has relinquished the captaincy role to Dan Biggar, who led the side in Jones' absence during the Six Nations.

While Keohane believes Jones was 'off the pace' in the Six Nations finale against Italy, Nel went one step further.

He said: "Alun Wyn Jones has looked to me like he's been done for a while now. I understand the value of veteran leadership in a squad that is struggling. I get it.

"But for me Wales have got some younger locks that are playing really well. I thought Adam Beard really impressed during the Lions series and I would definitely back those guys."
