Sonos fans will find a lot to like about the original Roam. It offers a decent, full-bodied sound, plenty of features and a sleek, portable design. The sound quality is bettered by rivals, however, but then they won't slot into your Sonos multi-room set-up.
For
- Full-bodied sound
- Lots of features
- Portable
Against
- Clarity not exceptional
- Average timing and dynamics

The Roam 2 is like the Roam, but more so. With minimal differences between it and the original, it may well appeal to Sonos fans, but maybe not anyone else. It offers simpler pairing, a tweaked design and improved controls, but the sound quality has been left alone. Shame.
For
- Meaty, substantial sonic presentation for its size
- Slim, handsome and reasonably well-made
- Strong features
Against
- Sound needs more clarity, subtlety and space
- Faces tough competition from cheaper, better models
- Minimal upgrades from previous generation
