Wisconsin has now reported 243 measles cases in 2026, and the local health officer at the center of the outbreak says the real number of infections is likely higher. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services posted the new total on Oct. 2, up 51 cases from the 192 the state had reported as of Sept. 25.
Kessa Klaas, health officer for Grant County, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that confirmed counts miss people because "not everyone gets tested, needs medical care or contacts their public health agency," according to the report republished by Wausau Pilot & Review. That warning shifts the question for families. The concern is no longer only where confirmed cases are, but whether someone at home with a fever and rash could be an uncounted case who is still exposing others.
