Soldier who died in Iraq training accident is named and pictured for first time

  • Lance Corporal James Freeman, a 28-year-old British soldier, has been named as the soldier who died during a training accident in Iraq .
  • He was a member of the Royal Anglian Regiment and joined the Army in June 2016.
  • Lance Corporal Freeman had served in various operations, including South Sudan, Cyprus, the Falklands, Jordan, Romania and Kenya, and contributed to the UK's Covid-19 response.
  • Colonel James WHM Bishop, commander of Operation Shader in Iraq, described him as a 'larger than life' and 'magnetically charming' leader.
  • His absence leaves a 'profound, irreplaceable void', and deepest condolences have been extended to his wife, family and regiment.
