Software Engineer Plans Exit After ₹9 Salary Hike, Claims Workplace Exploitation

In a Reddit post titled “I so done with this company and colleagues”, the tech professional described his experience at a reputed multinational company, where he claims he has been working under high pressure while feeling undervalued and “stuck.”

Joined as intern, later absorbed into full-time role

According to the post, the engineer joined the company in May 2024 as an intern for six months before being transitioned into a full-time position. He mentioned that he accepted the offer due to limited job opportunities after graduation, as the market conditions were unfavorable at the time.

He stated that his initial compensation package was ₹4.25 lakh per annum, with a take-home salary significantly lower than expected.

Bond and restrictive exit conditions

The employee further highlighted restrictive employment terms, including a two-year service bond that requires him to pay ₹1.5 lakh if he leaves the company before completing the tenure. He also pointed out a mandatory six-month notice period, which he believes makes it difficult for employees to switch jobs.

Claims of heavy workload and expenses

Describing his day-to-day responsibilities, the engineer alleged that he has been overworked, handling office duties along with client-site visits for compliance-related tasks. He also claimed that travel expenses are not reimbursed and that shuttle services to the main campus deduct a significant amount from employees’ salaries.

He added that although weekend work often leads to compensatory leave, it does not offset the overall workload and stress.

Frustration over stagnant pay

The engineer said his salary progression has been extremely poor, noting that his first-year hike amounted to just ₹9, while no increment was provided in the following year.

“I have been working on the same salary for 2 years… I’m really underpaid, not even able to save some money,” he wrote in the post, expressing frustration over what he sees as unfair treatment despite consistent effort.

‘Feeling stuck’ and seeking exit

He also alleged that his grade was downgraded after he attempted to exit a project, further adding to his dissatisfaction with the workplace environment.

Concluding his post, he wrote that despite his commitment to work quality, he feels trapped in an exploitative system and is now actively looking to leave the organization.

“I really wanna get out of this,” he stated.
