SCOTLAND could be £5100 better off per person if it was still in the EU, new figures suggest.
Figures from the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) estimate that Scotland’s GDP per capita in 2025 would have been around 13% higher had growth followed the EU average from 2014.
That equates to roughly £5100 per person in 2025 prices, according to figures obtained by the SNP.
The equivalent figure across the UK was estimated at £3600 per head, or around 8%.
The SNP said the figures strengthened the economic case for independence and Scotland rejoining the European Union.
It comes after separate analysis by Stanford University economics professor Nick Bloom estimated Brexit had reduced UK GDP by up to 8%, equivalent to around £3000 per person.
SNP depute leader Keith Brown said the latest figures showed “momentum is firmly behind Scotland’s right to decide”.
He said: “Our future is as an independent country back home in the EU and the simple fact is if we weren’t ripped out against our will, every Scot would be £5100 richer.
“We are a wealthy, energy rich, nation and our people must be afforded the basic democratic right to choose a future that is not tied to broken, Brexit Britain.
“That democratic right has been recognised by the British Prime Minister and Scottish Labour in what has been a seminal month in our constitutional story.
“The age of Westminster is coming to an end and with that comes the opportunity of a fresh start with independence and the chance to build our future as an independent nation back home in the EU.”
The Scottish Parliament this week backed a motion stating that Scotland “is a nation that has a right to decide its own future”, with Scottish Labour supporting the principle.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has also said the people of Scotland should ultimately determine their constitutional future, although he has maintained that a second independence referendum is currently “off limits”.
The Scottish Government's stated policy is for an independent Scotland to apply to rejoin the European Union as soon as possible after independence.
