Euro 2024 represents Slovenia's second appearance in tournament history as an independent nation, some 24 years on from their first. Denmark were the darlings of Euro 2020, surging into the semi-finals by channelling Christian Eriksen's on-field collapse in their opening game against Finland for their best tournament finish since lifting the Henri Delaunay trophy in 1992 as the biggest of underdogs. Two defeats, one draw and one goal at the 2022 World Cup was a meagre return but Kasper Hjulmand's side improved in qualifying and arrive in Germany on the back of three wins in a row, all against Scandinavian opponents.

Slovenia's squad may be lacking big tournament experience but theirs is a well-drilled side with match winners at both ends of the pitch. In goal, Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak is a five-time Zamora Trophy winner as La Liga's best goalkeeper, while centre-forward Benjamin Sesko is one of Europe's hottest young striking properties.
Winger Josip Ilicic is back in a Slovenia squad for the first time since 2021, the 37-year-old former Atalanta man having sufficiently recovered from depression brought about by the pandemic to again play for his country. A good news story that should be celebrated from the rafters.
Denmark, meanwhile, will look to Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund to replicate the seven-goal form he displayed in qualifying, while club-mate Christian Eriksen's long-range banger in the first of two warm-up friendlies may inspire the 31-year-old out of his 2023/24 slump.
Brentford winger Mikkel Damsgaard is pushing for a start, despite not scoring for either club or country since his semi-final free-kick against England three years ago. Joakim Maehle is a buccaneering full-back and excellent on the overlap.
