Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher aims brutal dig at BT Sport team prompting deleted tweet

Jamie Carragher has delivered a brutal putdown to BT Sport taking aim at their punditry line-up.

The broadcaster is simultaneously showing two Champions League quarter-final ties on Tuesday night as Liverpool take on Benfica in Lisbon, while Manchester City host reigning La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

The last time the Reds played at the Estadio da Luz was during the 2005/06 season as the Merseyside club suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League 16 clash - a tie they would eventually lose 3-0 on aggregate.

It was a drastically different team that day with the likes of Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano and Carragher in the starting XI. Ahead of this Tuesday's game, BT Sport reminisced about the fixture on social media by sharing a throwback photo of the team that appeared on that night 17 years ago.

BT Sport tweeted: "Liverpool's squad the last time they played Benfica in Lisbon." And a fiery reply to the post from Sky Sports' pundit Carragher, read: "That team is a lot better than your punditry team."

The original tweet posted by BT Sport was subsequently deleted.

Former Liverpool pair Michael Owen and Peter Crouch, as well as Rachel Brown-Finnis, were on punditry duty for the game, while Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves and Joleon Lescott were in the studio for Man City's clash with Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool are in pole position of the tie with a 2-0 lead at halftime as Ibrahima Konate and Sadio Mane got on the scoresheet. Luis Diaz returned to the line-up setting up the Senegal star just before the break as Diogo Jota missed out.

And Owen reckons Jurgen Klopp is just rotating his squad and the Portgual star will regain his place against City on Sunday. He said: "Well, Jota played the last game and I think Jota will play the next game, so he’s gone with Diaz tonight.

"It’s probably easy to let Jota miss out on tonight. Diaz didn’t play the last game, so you’ve got to give him a game. Mo Salah just plays all the games, he won’t be too happy if you drop him."

Owen reckons Salah will join Jota in the line-up at the Etihad and the final spot in Liverpool's front three is up for grabs between Roberto Firmino, Diaz and Mane. He added: "I think Mo Salah will play on Sunday too, and Jota looks like he’ll play too, so then it’s who will play in that third spot.

"This team is still really, really strong for tonight. Their opponents will be looking at the team sheet and thinking ‘oh no’. There are some real big hitters in that team."
