Skip the Market: ‘Rent’ a Mango Tree and Get 90kg of Mangoes

The Concept: Leasing a Mango Tree

A Kochi-based startup is pioneering this unique approach, allowing customers to lease a mango tree for one season. The process is simple: users go online, browse trees listed across various orchards, and pick one. According to India Today, the starting cost is around ₹10,300.

In return, customers receive the full produce from that tree for the season. Depending on the tree’s yield, this can amount to as much as 90 kilograms of mangoes.

How It Works

The orchards participating in this program are located in key mango-growing regions such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, reports News18. Farmers continue to care for the trees, managing everything from regular maintenance to harvesting.

The mangoes are allowed to ripen naturally before being picked. Once ready, they are packed and delivered directly to the customer’s home, eliminating the need for urban consumers to visit the orchards.

The Buzz Around the Model

This concept has drawn attention primarily because it offers a fresh perspective on fruit ownership. One user commented, “Never in my life did I think that ‘I own a mango tree in Kerala’ would be a flex from someone sitting in a Mumbai apartment.”

Others see a broader impact. One social media enthusiast noted, “This is a brilliant example of how simple ideas can reconnect people with nature and agriculture. Urban consumers get access to fresh, seasonal produce, while farmers or landowners enjoy a steady income without worrying about market price fluctuations. Models like this could also help preserve local orchards and encourage sustainable farming. If scaled well, initiatives like Rent A Tree could reshape how we think about food ownership and farm-to-home supply chains.”

With innovations like these, enjoying mangoes might soon become more than just a seasonal delight—it could become a personal connection to nature.
